Andy Rubin has just announced a new phone from his new start-up: Essential.
Being unveiled by the new start-up Essential, Andy Rubin’s new company, the Android device is intended be a direct competition to top smartphones from Apple and Samsung. The phone has been unveiled after months of teasing.
The screen takes up the whole front of the device. There is a slight curve on the top which houses the front-facing camera, and some bezel at the bottom. Other than that, it’s all taken up by the massive 5.7 inch screen. In fact, the screen is bigger than the current iPhone 7 Plus’ screen, which is 5.5 inches.
The back of the phone is modular, that is, you can attach any accessories you want. There are magnetic connectors which will let you attach accessories such as a 360-degree camera. These can be ordered alongside the phone.
The phone comes with 128GB of internal storage, 4GB of RAM, and a Qualcomm 835 processor. There are four colours to choose from: ‘Black Moon’, ‘Stellar Grey’, ‘Pure White’, and ‘Ocean Depths’. The casing is made out of titanium and ceramic, so the phone will surely have a premium feel to it. The front facing camera is an 8MP camera, while the back camera is a 13MP camera. Both cameras are able to shoot 4K video.
At the moment, the phone may only be bought from the United States, and prices start at $699 without the 360-degree camera. If you are tempted to importing the phone to Malta via a service such as Maltapost’s sendOn, you will be looking at around €800 to €900 with shipping and taxes.
